In case you don't watch the stock market, the oil crisis we are experiencing is making an impact. The mega-oil companies are making huge profits and they're cutting big dividend checks. In Alberta there are huge reserves of oil sands that rival the reserves of Saudi Arabia. Canadian Oil Sands Trust (US Symbol: COSWF) has more than quadrupled in price as the developers ramp up production at a time when crude prices are high and going higher.
While COSWF may be a most promising play on petroleum, with reserves that make it good for the next 30 years, we will ultimately need to develop sources of renewable non-polluting energy. What are the prospects? I recently ran across the web site of another Canadian company, Nevada Geothermal Power, Inc. (US Symbol NGLPF) that is exploring several potential geothermal sites in Nevada and Oregon with an eye toward developing them into electric generation facilities.
Maybe
Nevada Geothermal Power will be one answer to our need for clean reliable energy. It's worth watching. What other companies are working on alternatives to crude? Who will the major players be in five or ten years? If you have opinions, why not share them here.
