Global Warming Action

posted Sunday, 16 September 2007

John Schaeffer, founder of Real Goods, The Solar Living Institute, and author of Solar Living Handbook, shared his optimism on the future of solar energy in the Autumn 2007 issue of Earth Island Journal. Schaeffer presented a Global Warming Action Kit, in which he advances the idea that each of us can reduce our carbon emissions by 90% between now and 2030 by doing the five things below.

Schaeffer's thinking resonates strongly with my own. I have long felt that we cannot wait for our leaders or anyone else to solve the energy and global warming crises for us. We must take personal action NOW.

 Global Warming (personal) Action Plan

1. use compact flourescent lights

2. put in a photovoltaic system

3. put in a solar hot water system

4. install an instantaneous hot water heater

5. convert to either a hybrid or biodiesel car

It is believed that taking these five steps will reduce our personal carbon emissions by 90%

Use these steps as the foundation of YOUR personal carbon and energy action plan. And even more importantly, ACT!
